This surah also is famously quoted in verse 30 about fitrah, the state of purity and innocence Muslims believe all humans to be born with. v17-29 goes on to describe Allah’s miracles that are signs of the truth but we ignore or unable to comprehend these signs. The Surah takes it name from verse 2 where it mentions the defeat of the romans, or the byzantines. Those who are short sighted see only what is apparent but they do not realize that there is a Creator of the universe and it is He who is governing everything. The Surah is a reminder to the people that Allah (سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ) is in control of everything. One day, the Prophet (ﷺ) climbed up a hill and gathered the Quraysh around and said, “Do you see? If I inform you that cavalrymen are proceeding up the side of this mountain, will you believe me?” They said, “We have never heard you telling a lie.” Then he said, “I am a plain warner to you of a coming severe punishment.” Abu Lahab said, “May you perish! Is that why you have gathered us all here?” So there was revealed: ‘Perish the hands of Abu Lahab’ and this Surah was revealed. In Sahih Bukhari 4971 it mentions how Abu Lahab would criticize and try to make the Prophet seem foolish. He was one of the Meccan Quraysh leaders who vehemently opposed Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and Islam. The surah is about Prophet Muhammad’s uncle, Abd al-ʿUzzā ibn ʿAbd al-Muttalib (more popularly nicknamed Abu Lahab). Still his wealth and status would not aid him on that day. ![]() Meaning: Abu Lahab was one the the Prophet’s richest uncles and one of Qurayshi leaders. “His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained.” ![]()
